Letters from Lans: Body Image

I'm starting a series, Letters from Lans, on the blog where I just write about different topics and give some advice. Today's topic is body image. With so much social media, girls younger and younger are starting to develop eating disorders or just dysmorphic thoughts about their body. There is so much comparing all of the time, and social media just makes it even easier to do so. We have all fallen victim to this. Whether you saw a picture of another girl thought "I wish my legs looked like that" or "I wish my skin was that clear" or look at a girls page and think "wow she's so social and has so many friends and has so much fun." I'm gonna let you in on something that's not so secret. People can share whatever they want on social media, so they're going to make themselves look as pretty or as fun as they want. In reality they are dealing with the exact same problems as you. And I am sure are insecure about something. Something that is so scary and I witness to listening to some high school girls speak recently, is that social media is thought of to be reality. What needs to be clear is that photos can be manipulated with apps and editing tools, skin can be touched up, and smiles can be whitened. When I catch myself comparing, I step back and take the pictures posted lately. People aren't always as happy as their pixelated smiles seem. If other people's pictures are affecting you that much, take a social media cleanse. As much as I love my Instagram sometimes it is toxic and I need to take a break. Don't focus on every like or how many followers you have. Because in reality that's not going to lead to making you any happier. Surrounding yourself with good people and keeping a good mentality will. Be healthy when it comes to social media. Like everything else don't overindulge in it. Don't obsess in it. And most of all know that you are special and matter.

xx
